Reaching Out
Mothers need to know that it’s okay to ask for help.

Emotional changes during and after pregnancy can be confusing and disturbing not only to new mothers, but also to their family members, friends, and even healthcare providers. Sometimes it is difficult for women to ask for help because they are afraid of being misunderstood. Often when they try to explain their feelings to others, the response is not appropriate or helpful. Family, friends, and caregivers may wish to help, but not know how to help.

But there is information and support available. In recent years, emotional problems during pregnancy and postpartum mood issues have been studied in depth. Much is known about treatment and prevention. It is important to find the proper help.
